Humming autistic child?

If you have an autistic child and they enjoy humming please do not worry unduly as it is a common behaviour.

In this article we explain why they may be humming so to help you better understand their world.

Humming and autism

One of the common behaviour patterns seen in autism is humming or vocalising sounds frequently.

Humming however is not a unique behaviour in autism as neuro-typical children often engage in the activity also.

But with that said if your autistic child is humming constantly or at inappropriate times then it is helpful to know why they are doing so.

Naturally every child is different but the below are some possible motives for the humming.

Autistic child humming?
Self soothing

Autistic children may hum as a way to regulate their emotions and calm themselves down. The sound and vibration of humming can be soothing and provide a sense of comfort.

Sensory seeking

Some autistic children may enjoy the sensation of humming, and may seek out this sensory experience as a way to stimulate themselves.

As they hum a gentle vibration is produced in their mouth which will reverberate around their head. It may be that your child likes this feeling.

Expressing happiness.

Humming can be a way for autistic children to express their excitement or happiness about something they are experiencing.

If they do not yet have any other way in which they can express themselves then the noise provided by the hum may be the next best thing in their minds.

Communication

Expanding on the above, autistic children may use humming as a form of nonverbal communication, to express a need or desire without using words.

Blocking out outside noises

Your child may also be humming in an effort to control what he or she hears. Some children are sensitive to loud or distinctive noises and as such may be wary of them.

Your child may well have realised that if he or she hums then that drowns out any unwelcome or surprising external noises.

Stimming

Humming can be a form of stimming, which is a self-stimulatory behavior that autistic individuals engage in to regulate their sensory input and reduce stress or anxiety.

Summary – Humming autistic child

It’s important to note that every autistic child is unique, and there may be other reasons why a child engages in humming.

It’s always best to observe and communicate with the child to better understand their individual needs and behaviors.
